Tattoo Machine Maintenance Guide
A well-maintained machine lasts longer, performs better, and protects your clients. This guide covers the essential maintenance routines for rotary and coil machines.

Daily Cleaning
After every session, wipe down the machine with a medical-grade disinfectant. Do not submerge the machine unless the manufacturer explicitly says it is waterproof.
Remove any ink residue from the grip, tube, and body. Dried ink can affect balance and contaminate future setups.
Weekly Maintenance (Rotary)
Check the needle bar and cam for wear. Lubricate any moving parts with the oil specified by the manufacturer. Do not use random household oils.
Inspect the grip o-rings and rubber bands. Replace them if they show signs of cracking or stretching.
Test the machine at different voltages to make sure performance has not degraded.
Weekly Maintenance (Coil)
Check the contact screw and front spring for proper alignment. The contact screw should hit the front spring squarely.
Clean the coils and capacitor area with a dry cloth. Moisture and ink buildup can cause electrical issues.
Tighten all screws. Vibration loosens them over time.
Check spring tension. Weak springs cause inconsistent hits.
Battery Care (Wireless Machines)
Do not let lithium batteries drain completely. Recharge when they hit 20–30%.
Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Extreme heat degrades battery life.
If you notice the battery no longer holds a charge like it used to, replace it. A dying battery causes voltage drops mid-session.
When to Service or Replace
If your machine suddenly becomes louder, vibrates more, or the hit feels inconsistent, it is time for a deep service.
Most quality machines last several years with proper care. Budget machines may need replacement after 1–2 years of heavy use.
