Tattoo Machine Needle Compatibility Guide

Tattoo Machine Index Editorial3 min read

Not all tattoo machines work with all needle types. Understanding compatibility helps match supplies to the machine and avoid frustrating setup issues.

Cartridge vs. Standard Needles

Cartridge needles are self-contained units that snap into a compatible grip. They are the modern standard and are used by most rotary and pen-style machines.

Standard needles (or flats) require a traditional tube and rubber band setup. They are mainly used with coil machines.

Most machines sold today are cartridge-compatible. Always check the manufacturer's specs before ordering needles.

Cartridge Systems

The two main cartridge standards are Cheyenne Hawk and standard cartridge. Cheyenne uses a proprietary plunger system, while standard cartridges use a membrane or rubber band to push the needle.

Many machines support both, but some only work with one type. FK Irons, Bishop, and most Chinese-made pens use standard cartridges. Cheyenne Sol Nova uses Cheyenne cartridges.

Needle Groupings Explained

Round Liners (RL): Grouped in a tight circle for lines and outlines. Sizes: 1RL, 3RL, 5RL, 7RL, 9RL, 14RL.

Round Shaders (RS): Grouped in a loose circle for shading and soft color. Sizes: 3RS, 5RS, 7RS, 9RS.

Magnums (M1, M2, Curved): Flat or curved rows for shading and color packing. Sizes: 5M1, 7M1, 9M1, 11M1, 13M1, 15M1.

Choose your needle based on the technique, not just the machine. A good machine handles all groupings within its stroke range.

Common Compatibility Issues

Needle not extending far enough: The grip depth or stroke length may be wrong for that cartridge type.

Needle wobbling: The cartridge may be loose in the grip. Try a different brand or check the grip for wear.

Inconsistent ink flow: Some cartridges have better membranes than others. Cheap cartridges often have poor ink retention.
